N105TB to BGR today
N20NY 3-Dec local from BED ...and a short hop to ORH as well on the same day
Interesting job opportunity! http://http://jobs.brassring.com/1033/ASP/TG/cim_jobdetail.asp?jobId=257332&type=search&JobReqLang=1&recordstart=1&JobSiteId=48
Listen to BED approach N105TB is airborne from Springfield en route to Bedford. I am currently listening to the streaming audio which can be found at http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/kbed.m3u Good fun...you can also watch on the noise monitoring site www.passur.com and look for BOS then zoom out as much as you can to the west.....N105TB is blocked so will appear as a track labelled ZQXnnnn
Image
N105TB has been at Groom Lake for 3 weeks or so and is now heading home via Springfield, IL. Interestingly, as often the case, the first flight plan filed shows TKM as the origin. This plan is later cancelled and replaced by one from TNX. Maybe TKM really is TiKabooMountain after all....
N255SA back to VGT Yesterday (13-Nov) N255SA returned to base at North Las Vegas.
N255SA VGT-OXR today The DHC6 flew from North Las Vegas to Oxnard today; recently it's been going to Point Mugu which is just down the coast a few miles.
N404PA MIA-BED 5-Nov-04 Maybe it was there for maintenance; seems unlikely that it would be doing missions from Miami but who knows...

Off topic but interesting - this is the F-16's display at MCAS Miramar show on 15-Oct-2004.
N105TB from IWA to DRA After a brief stop at Williams-Gateway, N105TB departed for DRA which is Desert Rock, NV. This is the point where the aircraft stops being processed by the FAA systems; it doesn't actually land at DRA airport of course, but having descended to 14000feet or so over DRA changes to Military radar control at Nellis and continues to Groom Lake. A Red Flag exercise is on at the moment with the usual players including Aussies and Brits. I don't recall N105TB being at Groom at the same time as Red Flag so maybe there will be some reports of it at and around Nellis over the next few weeks.
N105TB to Groom via TUL and IWA Sat on the hotel balcony listening to LA Center in Palm Springs; just down the road an hour or so ago N105TB left Williams-Gateway for Groom Lake. Unfortunately its track is a little too far east of my present position to see.....shame! N404PA meanwhile has gone to MIA.
N105TB popped in at IND presumably just as a tech stop, but did a day return from BED to TUL on 8-Oct. There's some Gulftream dealerships there so perhaps they were picking up some spares. Meanwhile, N404PA is still at Pt Mugu playing around between there and San Clemente Island and San Nicolas Island
Image
N105TB heading west to TUL I wonder where next....duh.....let's speculate.....
N404PA Pt Mugu-San Clemente and back Perhaps the crew fancied Sunday lunch on the island? Perhaps it didn't land there anyway.
Image
A busy day!...... N661BA to NAS Fallon and back N255SA is at Point Mugu N404PA landed Point Mugu at 2253UTC looks like something interesting will be going on next week
Meanwhile N404PA is off too to WRI = McGuire AFB. Haven't seen it go there before.

The Twin Otter N255SA is off again This time from North Las Vegas to Point Mugu
N105TB BED-BGR-BED ....on 22-Sep.
N105TB and N232MT back to BED Both flew back from MHT to BED yesterday
N105TB on a local from MHT Manchester, NH I believe
N20NY to TEB and back today It filed to TEB but filed via SWF (Stewart-Newburgh Intl, NY) on the return. I guess it's been shooting some approaches there. The Lincoln Labs fleet have an affinity for SWF - see the photos of N404PA on jetphotos (or is it aitliners.net?)
N20NY back to BED it routed EGI (Eglin Aux 3) via RDU (Raleigh-Durham) back home for the weekend
N20NY via Little Rock to Eglin today Destination was EGI which comes up as Eglin Aux number 3!
N20NY on a local to Portsmouth, NH
N20NY and N404PA on a local together... ...N20NY went for a 90min trip BED-BED today with N404PA. The latter departed at 1456UTC and 'NY' at 1459.
Potted history of Lincoln Labs a good read and refers to our favourite aircraft http://www.ll.mit.edu/news/journal/pdf/12_2Dela.pdf
http://www.pacsengineering.com/experience.htm This says they're working on a load monitoring program for Lincoln Labs Special Mission G II
N74A Gulf II aka HALO-I in CA It's been flying our of Point Mugu and Monterey at the end of July but has now gone back to RVS (Tulsa, Richarrd Lloyd Jones airport) to join sistership Gulfstream 3 N178B HALO-II

N20NY - recent photo There's photos of N20NY in Canada a few years ago in a fetching red colour scheme on www.airliners.net or maybe www.jetphotos.com ; also N404PA the B707. Anyhow, N20NY has had a change of image

Here's a fax from MIT to FAA... Perhaps I should get in touch with the flight test manager to ask if he's got any good shots of the fleet for the website.  benkert@ll.mit.edu   Or maybe he'd like some of ours for their website....

Aha....suspicions condfirmed.  Two 'new' DHC6s. New additions to the Lincoln labs inventory in the 'national interest' are DHC6-300s N63AR and N255SA.
N255SA from East to West (Hawthorne) It seems a jolly long way from Bedford, Mass to Jack Northrop Municipal, Hawthorne California in a Twin Otter.  But N255SA is doing just that and will arrive shortly on the west coast.  Presumably some wonderful sensor gizmo is to be installed, tweaked, checked....
N404PA heading west from BED   It's filed to LSV (Nellis AFB)
N232MT and N255SA back to BED   After a week at IAD, they've returned home in time for the weekend.
N20NY has left Holloman heading home 14-Jul HMN1310UTC-SPI1510 it filed a plan onward from SPI to BED but I didn't see it go live; so either the aircraft is tech or it escaped the tracker!
IAD is the place to be.... .....another interesting aircraft has gone to Dulles today, this time N187D a CN-235. There's some photos of this and its sister ship N196D on http://www.airliners.net A friend of mine jokes about these as beng operated by 'the Langley Parachute Club'!

Maybe there's some MIT/Lincoln Labs love-in at the Pentagon tomorrow. Both N232MT a Cessna 206 and N255MA the DHC6 have gone there today
N255SA DH6 has just departed BED (at 1724UTC) for Washington-Dulles (IAD).

N404PA active too! Lincoln Labs seem to have the whole fleet in action this month. Here is N404PA the B707 which appears to have flown from China Lake ot Nellis today. The last B707 I've seen was N707AR 'Omega Tanker' at Point Mugu (the same day as N105TB) although this is just coincidence. N404PA has been at Point Mugu in the past; what with N20NY at Holloman and N105TB at either Bedford or Manchester, NH it's all go! There's some photos of N404PA at www.jetphotos.net which are well worth a look.

N105TB filed to fly BED-NHT (Manchester, NH) on 17-May
Some have asked about the recent activities at Point Mugu regarding the reasons for the 'Janet' Beech trips that go via Oxnard to San Nicolas Island. I can't profess to understand this but the CALP (Civil Aircraft Landing Program) states companies that are permitted to land at military facilities. This is also a rather good guide to the umbrella organisations for various nefarious activities undertaken by pseudo-civilian aircraft and a Google or two turns up the most interesting companies. I'll sort out the links properly later but CALP listing is a good start as it shows Lincoln Labs strangely the latest one that I can turn up (thanks for the tipoff G) CALP Jan-2004 listing doesn't include Lincoln Labs Anyhow there's hours of fun here....if you're just starting out as a Fox Mulder-type person, do a search on the companies listed as 'worldwide'. All sorts of interesting stuff; I'm just curious why it's all in the pub
N4505S is another of MIT's aircraft; it's a Beech F33 i.e. a 4? seater. Interestingly they seem to be using it as a crew ferry. Today (Fri 14-May) it went BED-ISP a 2042 then departed ISP 2056 back to BED. Shortly after this, N105TB departed back to BED.

N105TB is returning to home base at Bedford, Mass after 2 and a half weeks at Islip, NY. There is presumably some reason for this which we'll fathom later! Wed 21-Apr BED-ISP Fri 14-May ISP-BED

This year's excursion to Tikaboo Peak may not have included the same level of activity over Groom Lake as last year but was memorable in that it was the first (and perhaps last) time that I was able to log a serial using the naked eye from Tikaboo. Most of the time one is fiddling with high-powered telescopes, cameras and the like carried up the 7900ft mountain and seeing aircraft at all due to the 26 miles distance from the base is all one expects. Below is HH-60G 91-26352 snooping around us during a security patrol; nice to meet you guys! Next time perhaps you could pick us up and take us for a ramp tour....or at least offer us a ride back to the 'parking lot' at the base of the mountain. If you have any photos of me waving I'd be most interested! To be honest I was a little surprised to be standing on top of a mountain in one of the remotest parts of the world being looked at very closely by the security people from the base. Can't remember if I put this up before but here's what N105TB was up to in 2002/3 according to the Director of Lincoln Labs in his report to MiT http://web.mit.edu/annualreports/pres03/05.00.html Airborne Seeker Test Bed The capabilities of modern air defense missile systems have been severely challenged by the advent of low-flying vehicles and modern electronic countermeasures. The Airborne Seeker Test Bed (ASTB) is an instrumentation platform developed by Lincoln Laboratory to investigate these challenges and to identify appropriate seeker architectures and signal processing algorithms. The ASTB, which operates in a Gulfstream II aircraft, provides high fidelity RF and IR reference instrumentation sensors. These sensors are used in parallel with special-purpose wing-pod payloads carrying seekers or sensors being tested. In 2003, ASTB activities include four test campaigns, sensor development, and infrastructure upgrades.

I haven't looked at Point Mugu in much detail before but it seems to be the only place - apart from home base BED - that all three big MIT aircraft have visited in recent past. Thanks to Chris for pointing out 'MTH' as the code for MIT as used for the B707 N404PA and the DA10 (really DA20) N20NY....see below which has been edited to remove EGJ F27s, heavy civil airliners and BYA.
Some stuff on Point Mugu http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/point-mugu.htm As a national leader for over 35 years, the Radar Reflectivity Laboratory at Point Mugu remains in the forefront of radar cross-section (RCS) measurements and radar signature control technology. The facility provides monostatic and bistatic radar signature characterization and diagnostics of test objects. The application of wide-band RCS data to Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) imaging of complex objects was pioneered at the laboratory in the 1970s, and is used to conduct signature diagnostics for a variety of applications. The two large anechoic chambers are equipped with compact-range collimating reflectors which provide far-field measurement conditions. The Bistatic Anechoic Chamber is the only facility of its kind in the world to provide full 180-degree horizontal and 90-degree vertical bistatic RCS measurements. All chambers can accommodate a wide variety of test items inclu

Yes it was N27RA. n27ra_crash_report.doc
Let's assume that it was N27RA that crashed. No sign of it since the day of the incident although it hasn't shown up in the accident databases yet. Meanwhile N105TB appears to be at Pt Mugu again. Although the last flight plan was filed to PMD it appears to have stopped tracking over Camarillo, CA which is around 9 miles from Pt Mugu as the crow - or G2 - flies. Thus its altitude of 2700ft 9nm out would appear to be good. Unless Camarillo happens to be at 2700 elevation which I'll check in a sec. Apologies to Gary for my part in a wild goose chase to try and find it at PMD! N105TB_26Mar04_TXNPMD.doc

Actually neither of the BE1900s has been reported since the date of the crash. Will put the history of N27RA on here in a sec
Here is the history for N20RA_15Mar04.doc This was the last filed flight plan on the day before the crash (Monday). It shows it went from Oxnard to (by the track shown here) Groom Lake as it stopped tracking in the usual area NE of Indian Springs where it changes SSR code and changes freq to Military radar.
Hi Paul & all, a little more detail has appeared on the wires over the past few hours, courtesy of AP: Five people died Tuesday morning when an Air Force plane crashed in the Nevada desert about 125 miles northwest of Nellis Air Force Base, military officials said. The Beechcraft KA 1900 went down about 5 a.m. in an unpopulated area of the Nevada Test and Training Range, killing four contractors and the Air Force civilian pilot, Staff Sgt. Shane Sharp said. The Air Force did not release their identities. There were no survivors. Sharp said the plane was on a routine mission, ferrying the four contractors to the Tonopah Test Range. The cause of the crash is unknown and remains under investigation. The website for Lincoln Labs also says this A major part of our Surface Surveillance Program involves using advanced signal processing and adaptive-array techniques for locating communications emitters in high-interference environments. We’re also investigating how advanced processing techniques can maintain surveillance radar performance in hostile electronic environments. A second major emphasis is on Tactical Air Defense which includes a broad range of activities in the detection, location, identification, and engagement of air vehicles. We combine the modeling results of phenomenological investigations and testing insights from air vehicle measurements into system performance predictions. Our suite of state-of-the-art instrumentation sensors includes two business-sized jet aircraft with instrumented radar and infrared sensors and electronic countermeasure systems.
The Lincoln Labs report for 2001-2002 is finally on the web at Annual Report 2002 from MIT included in here is this Airborne Seeker Test Bed The Airborne Seeker Test Bed, in a Gulfstream II aircraft, has participated this year in two major test campaigns and infrastructure upgrades. One of the test campaigns was conducted in Nevada to evaluate the effectiveness of electronic countermeasures against a modern surface-to-air missile system and to measure bistatic radar cross sections. The second test utilized the seeker test bed's IR focal-plane arrays and IR seekers to test flare countermeasures.

from the black-triangle mailing list Message: 19 Date: Tue, 27 Jan 2004 03:54:14 -0000 From: "gariac450" Subject: A few Janet recordings near the TTR N27RA Janets on Nellis freq Two things to note in this recording.
